Visit Recapitate’s workshop/showroom in Twentynine Palms California. The building sits next to Todd’s home at the base of the Joshua Tree National Park (3 million visitors per year). When you visit, we'll spend about 40 minutes talking hats, measuring your head properly, and clarifying your vision as you try on different styles. If you're after a custom hat, we'll go through each detail until we have a cohesive plan. You'll find a large array of materials to choose from. We'll consider your head shape, face structure, color palette, silhouette, and personal style. When choosing a Recapitate Custom hat ($550), you'll select your ideal felt stiffness, thickness, weight, and any aging or distress effects. You can choose your crown's shape and height, as well as your brim length, shape, and curves. You're welcome to pick through Todd’s collection of hatband materials—bandanas, leather lace, rope, ribbon, wire, tattered cloth, dyed and antique scraps, oxidized metal bits, and more. Whether you want a clean, tidy look or a hat that looks like you've been walking across the desert for decades, Recapitate is the answer.

There are also quite a few ready-to-wear hats in the workshop for sale at any given time. Most hats are $475, while wool hats are generally $75 to $100 cheaper (depending on the sweatband). Just like the hats on the website, most can be made in your size for the listed price (4 to 6 weeks turnaround).

Hi-Desert Retail Store

Many visitors like to stop at Mojave Flea Trading Post in Yucca Valley on their way to Recapitate's workshop. It's a beautiful store filled with quality goods from quite a few desert brands and makers. Located on Hwy 62 directly on the way for most people traveling from the west (LA, Palm Springs etc.), it can be helpful to get a sense of the styles, shapes and colors you gravitate toward before you arrive at the workshop. Between the webstore, Mojave Flea, and Recapitate's workshop, you're unlikely to see any styles more than once. There are usually about 50 ready-to-wear hats available.
